Medaille Defeats Men's Volleyball

BUFFALO, NY – Trevor Barrett knocked down 16 kills and hit 77.8 percent for the game to lead Medaille past Penn State Behrend 3-0 in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action on Wednesday night.

The Mavericks (6-6, 4-1 UVC) were able to pick up the conference win with a 25-16, 25-16 and 25-22 decision to sweep the Lions (5-7, 2-4 UVC).

Grant Kocher (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) recorded a team-best 11 kills and two blocks for Behrend.

Medaille only committed three attacking errors in the first two sets to pave the way for the third-set win.

The Mavericks never trailed in all three sets, but the Lions managed to not make it an easy win. In the first set, Medaille jumped ahead 12-6 before Behrend needed to call a timeout. After the break, Barrett tallied three kills including two consecutive that pushed the lead to 19-12. Cory Philips helped the Mavericks get the 25-16 win with a pair of assists on the final two points.

Medaille mimicked the first set in the second, taking an early 12-7 lead. The Lions got within three points at 15-12, however registered four kills in the final five points for a two-set lead.

Behrend tried to rally in the third set, winning the final 10 of the 18 combined points. The Mavericks were able to hold off the Lions in the end thanks to a pair of kills from Luke Wolanin and another by Eric Moscato for the match.

Evan Fullerton (McMurray, PA/McMurray) finished with 24 helpers and Nathan Steele (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) added six kills. Derek Polishen (Plum, PA/Plum) managed five digs.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at New Jersey City. The Lions face Gallaudet at 10 a.m.
