Men's Volleyball Sweeps SUNYIT

NEW PALTZ, NY – The Penn State Behrend men's volleyball team posted their seventh shut-out victory with a 3-0 win over SUNYIT on the second day of the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover held at SUNY New Paltz.

The Lions (9-10, 3-7 UVC) hit .387 in the three-game match, only committing one error in the first game to win by a convincing 25-13 score. Behrend went on to win 25-15 and 25-19 in the remaining two games.

Three players had eight kills for the Lions. Ty Sheehan (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton), Grant Kocher (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) and Nathan Steele (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) were the leaders in kills. Sheehan had six digs and one block.

With a small 8-6 lead in the first game, Behrend went on a 10-3 run to take an 18-9 advantage thanks to three kills by Sheehan and Steele. SUNYIT only scored four more points and had two error attacks to end the game in the Lions favor.

With a 19-14 edge in game two, Kevin Smith (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) served four straight points for a 22-15 lead. Josh Oertly (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) had a kill off a Colin Ingram (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Darby) pass, before Steele closed out the second game with a kill from an assist by Evan Fullerton (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge).

The third game came down to the end. SUNYIT held a two-point lead at 19-17, but Behrend won the next eight straight points to finish the match.

Ingram tallied 20 assists and Fullerton managed to collect 15 helpers in the win.

The Lions return to action on Thursday at home against D'Youville. Match begins at 7 p.m.
