Lions Win Kenyon College Classic in Dramatic Fashion

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Penn State Behrend women's indoor track & field team won the Kenyon College Classic, finishing first out of nine teams with an overall score of 106.5 on Saturday.

The Lions were tied with Kenyon after 16 events with a 100.5 total, leaving the meet in the hands of the final 4x400 relay team. Courtney Sargent (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy), Katelyn Hancock (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park), Jenna Shelton (Cabot, PA/Knoch) and Caitlin Plazony (Fairview, PA/Fairview) came in fourth place in 4:21.30 to get the meet victory for Behrend and edge out Waynesburg by two and a half points (104). The hosts took third (103.5) and Wooster placed fourth (73).

Rachel Pell (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward) and Paige Allen (Butler, PA/Butler) each tallied three wins on the day to help build the lead for the Lions.

Pell won the 60m hurdles, the 400m and joined Allen in the winning 4x200 relay. The junior tallied the same time in the 60m hurdle prelims and finals, smashing her school record in the process with a new time of 9.37. Pell also crossed the line first in the 400m in 1:00.84.

Pell, Allen, Ashlyn Carlsson (Butler, PA/Knoch) and Haley Yenchik (Cecil, PA/Canon McMillan) made up the winning 4x200 relay that broke the school record and Kenyon facility record in 1:45.16.

Allen added a win in the 60m and the 200m on the day. She tallied a winning time of 7.87 in the 60m and 25.80 in the 200m. Yenchik was a close second in the 60m (8.25).

Carlsson finished behind Allen in the 200m, taking second in 27.33 and she was also second on the team and sixth overall in the 400m (1:02.85).

Riley Crissman (Bradford, PA/Bradford) was .88 seconds behind the winner of the 3000m to earn second overall. She clocked in with a time of 10:58.99 in a field of 16 runners. In the other long distance race, Becca Worley (Townville, PA/Maplewood) was the top finisher for the Lions and was fifth overall in 20:43.70.

Hancock led Behrend in the 800m with a third-place finish in 2:24.58 and Shelton was in the Top 10, taking seventh in 2:28.62. Hancock also was sixth in the one-mile run (5:28.48).

In the field events, Myeisha Sanders (Erie, PA/East) claimed third in the shotput with a distance of 8.96m (29-04.75). The pole vault was represented by Maura Costa (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin). She attempted 3.15m and only cleared 3.00m for eighth overall.
