Vetica Tied For First; Lions Sit Second at Edward Jones Shootout

PITTSBURGH, Pa.  – Dante Vetica (Hermitage, PA/Kennedy Catholic) is tied for the lead with a team-low score of 74, helping the Penn State Behrend men's golf team finish in second place after day one of the Edward Jones Shootout hosted by Carnegie Mellon on Saturday.

The Lions had three golfers shoot in the 70's to end the first day just two strokes behind the leader Allegheny. Behrend sits in second with a team total of 305.

Vetica tied Colin Izzo of Washington & Jefferson, carding a 35 on the front nine and 39 on the back for a 74. Kevin Koerbel (Gibsonia, PA/Deer Lakes) had the same score on the back nine as Vetica, but had a 36 on the front to sit one stroke away from first with a 75. Koerbel and three others tied for fourth on the day.

Matt Gurska (Hermitage, PA/Kennedy Catholic), who won the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational yesterday with a 74, came back today to shoot a 76 and tie for sixth overall. He had the best team score on the last nine with a 36 and tallied a 40 on the front.

Zach Polanski (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) tied for 20th with a score of 80 for the par 70 course. He carded a 40 on both the front and back for his total. Scott Klein (Erie, PA/Fairview) started out with a 37 on the first nine and then hit 44 on the back to finish with an 81, tying for 25th.

The Lions return to action tomorrow for day two of the shootout. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m.
