Hyrne scored a combined five goals and Brian Shapter made 15 saves in two games to help the
Behrend men’s water polo team split on the second day of the
Navy Open in Annapolis, Maryland on Sunday.
The Lions (1-3) collected their first victory of the season with an 11-8 victory over Lindenwood, before falling to Vanguard, 14-7.
In the first game, Hyrne and Colin McGarry tallied a hat trick while Nick Loukides and Ali Khan scored a pair of goals for Behrend. Shaptar came away with seven saves in the win. Lindenwood held a 6-5 edge at halftime, but the Lions were able to score six goals in the second half and hold the Lindenwood Lions to just two for the three-goal difference.
Down 4-1 after the first quarter against Vanguard, Behrend was able to net three goals in the second quarter to knot the game at 4-all by intermission. Vanguard scored five goals in each of the next two quarters, while the Lions were scoreless in the third and added three more in the fourth.
Khan and Hyrne recorded two goals apiece for Behrend. Loukides, Brandon Horsch and Max Hrbal all scored one goal in game two. Shapter posted eight saves and one steal.
The Lions return to action on Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational. First game begins at 9:45 a.m.
