ERIE, Pa. – Colin McGarry scored a game-high five goals and Brian Shapter made seven saves to lead Penn State Berhend men’s water polo team over Washington & Jefferson 12-11 on Saturday at the Junker Center.

In the first game of the day, the Lions fell to Mercyhurst, 18-6. On the day, Ali Khan and Nic Pabich each scored five goals. They scored a hat trick apiece against the Lakers and then added two more against the Presidents.

Behrend outscored W&J by one goal in each quarter except the fourth. With a 2-1 lead after the first, the Lions had their most offensive output in the second with a 6-5 edge to hold an 8-6 advantage at halftime.

Nick Loukides and Sam Hyrne tallied a pair of goals in the win. Hyrne also dished out a game-best five assists.

Mercyhurst had 13 different players score and scatter 18 goals over four quarters, recording five in the second and third. Shapter posted five saves to get a combined 12 saves on the afternoon.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Notre Dame and Gannon. Game times are 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
