Women's Water Polo Falls Twice at CWPA Championships

SAINT PAUL, Mn. – The Penn State Behrend women's water polo team lost twice on Saturday at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships.

In game one, the Lions fell to Washington & Jefferson, 9-1.

The nightcap saw Behrend battle Utica. The Pioneers defeated the Lions 7-5, but Behrend refused to go down without a fight.

The Lions trailed 2-0 early, but Mary Therese Causgrove's (Erie, PA/McDowell) goal sliced the deficit in half giving Behrend some much needed momentum.

After another Utica goal, Causgrove struck again at the 1:51 mark, again bringing the Lions within one goal.

Thereafter, the Pioneers were able to pad their lead, scoring twice to go up 6-3.

Brittany Pinter (Erie, PA/McDowell) responded, however, blasting two shots through to bring Behrend within one goal at 6-5.

Utica, though, was able to hold on for a 7-5 victory.

Freshman goalie Kara Stegmann (Harleysville, PA/Souderton Area) made six saves in the hard-luck loss for the Lions.

Causgrove scored three times for Behrend, and Pinter added two goals.

The Lions will continue their run at the Division III Championships on Sunday, April 13.
