ERIE, Pa. – Peter Brower (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) fired a shot past the keeper with 99:99 on the clock in overtime to give the Penn State Behrend men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Medaille in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Wednesday afternoon.
After falling behind 2-0, the Lions (10-1, 4-0 AMCC) scored three unanswered goals to earn their 10th consecutive victory.
In the 26th minute the Mavericks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by John Taggart. The two teams relied on their defense to take the one-goal game into halftime.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Medaille netted another goal to take command. Over the next 25 minutes, Behrend was still unable to get the offense going.
Now, with less than 10 minutes to play, the Lions found some life. Garrett Fiscus (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) led a long ball to Eric Hackworth (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) who headed the ball to the back of the net to cut the deficit in half.
With the pressure on and time winding down, Eric Vunovic (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) dribbled into the box and laced the ball through the pipes to tie the game at 2-all. Neither team scored for the remaining five minutes, sending the game into overtime.
In the ten-minute overtime session, each team managed one shot until Brower came through for the Lions. After Jake Gamble (Butler, PA/Butler) received a long pass up the side, he crossed the ball over the box to Brower. With the seconds ticking away, Brower took one last shot and hit the back of the net with one second remaining, giving Behrend the dramatic 3-2 win.
The Lions will be back in action on Saturday to host Pitt-Greensburg at 3 p.m.
