Allegheny Edges Lions in Men's Swimming and Diving

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team battled Allegheny down to the final event, but fell to the Gators 128-112 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon in Meadville, Pa.

Sophomore diver Lucas Kachurick (McKeesport, PA/Elizabeth Forward) qualified for the NCAA's in both the 1m and 3m. He won both events with a 290.85 and 318.80 score, respectively, out of four divers competing. Danny Ketterer (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) was second in the 1-meter (250.25) and Andrew Neder (Erie, PA/Fairview) took third (180.45).

Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) won the 50 free for the Lions. He clocked in with a best time of 22.78. Andrew Opalewski (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) picked up an individual win, touching first in the 100 free in 50.83. Everett Sargent (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) came in third in the same event (51.34).

Brian Mong (Franklin, PA/Franklin) and Clay Altemose (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge) swam well individually for Behrend. Mon was second in the 1650 free (18:20.38) and Altemose recorded a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:06.08).

Both relay teams came in second place. The opening 200 medley relay consisting of Simon, Sargent, Jake Sherk (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabthtown) and Peter Blazak (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) tallied a time of 1:41.84. Opalewski replaced Sherk for the final 200 free relay. The foursome posted a time of 1:31.22.

The Lions returns to action on next Saturday against St. Vincent.  Meet time is 1 p.m.
