Men's Swimming & Diving Wins Fredonia State Blue Devil Invite

FREDONIA, NY  – Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) won an individual event, while swimming on two first-place relay teams and setting two team records to help the Penn State Behrend capture the Fredonia State Blue Devil Invitational on Sunday.

The Lions held the lead after the first two days of competition and won the invitational by more than 300 points to second place Fredonia State.

Simon set the pool record in the 100 backstroke during the preliminaries, and then reset the pool record and broke the team record in the finals with a time of 52.80. He was a part of the first-place 200 medley relay team along with Clay Altemose (Apollo, PA/Apollo-Ridge), Justin Pritchard (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) and Dane Dombrosky (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant) that swam 1:35.98 to break the team record.

The winning 400 free relay team consisting of Simon, Altemose, Dombrosky, and Peter Blazak (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) posted a time of 3:13.79 to collect the last victory and fourth of the day out of seven events.

Following Simon in the 100 backstroke was Altemose in second place (53.70), Jake DesRoches (Fairfax, VA/WT Woodson) in seventh (57.93) and Brendan Miller (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley) in eighth (1:00.49).

Altemose tallied a win for Behrend in the 100 butterfly. He touched in 52.50 to lead two other swimmers in the top eight. Blazak was sixth in 54.79 and Miller finished eighth in 57.46.

In the one-meter diving, Lucas Kachurick (McKeesport, PA/Elizabeth Forward) was runner up with a score of 462.40 for 11 dives.

Pritchard led the Lions in the 200 breaststroke, placing third in 2:13.64. He had Jake Sherk (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) on his heels, who claimed fourth in 2:16.'

After a great weekend, Brian Mong (Franklin, PA/Franklin) completed the success with third in the 200 free (1:48.59). Teammate Andrew Opalewski (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) was fourth with a time of 1:49.05.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at home against Westminster. Meet begins at 1 p.m.
