Women's Basketball Handles Fredonia; Advances to Championship Game

ERIE, Pa. – Four players scored in double figures, including a team-high 15 points from freshman Holly Bourquin to lead the Behrend women's basketball team past Fredonia 68-52 in the first round of the 2010 Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the Lions in the Junker Center.

Bourquin added seven boards, four steals, three blocks and two assists in her debut with Behrend (1-0), which advances to the championship game tomorrow against Westminster at 3 p.m. The Titans defeated Otterbein in the second semifinal, 66-65.

Emily Detsch was one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. Kim Pol and Abby Henderson each chipped in 10 points.

Kristen Kuscht came off the bench to tie a game high of 15 points. Grace Moore added 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

The Lions made the first five minutes of the game look easy, taking an 11-0 lead thanks to four points by Pol and Detsch each. The Blue Devils stopped the scoring draught at the 14:38 mark with a free throw by Hebert.

Henderson scored the next five points for Behrend to push the lead to 13 points. A 13-2 Fredonia run made it a two-point game at 18-16, but Lions used a run of their own to take back the double-digit lead. A Bourquin jumper with four seconds in the half gave Behrend a 31-21 advantage at intermission.

The Blue Devils got within single digits on the opening basket of the second half by Hebert but that would be the closest in the remainder of the game.

Behrend continue build upon the first-half lead with a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to make it 43-23. The largest lead by the Lions was 21 points on five occasions.
