ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's basketball team made it rain three-pointers with a season-high 14 triples to upset 19th-ranked Medaille 75-61 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Wednesday night in the Junker Center.
In addition to the upset, the Lions (11-4, 7-2 AMCC) snapped the Mavericks (14-2, 9-1 AMCC) 12-game winning streak and handed them their first AMCC loss in the last 30 games.
Aly Eagle made it a night to remember, knocking in five from downtown for a career-high 21 points. Amy Oldach was one rebound shy of her first triple-double this season. She scored 15 points and tied a career best with 11 assists to go with nine caroms.
Medaille was led by freshman Joelle Pollak with a 15 points, six assists and five steals. She was backed up by 14 points from Bianca Smiley and 11 from Kacie Mills.
The game was not decided until the final three minutes, despite Behrend taking the lead for good at the 15:42 mark of the second half. The Lions did not extend the lead to more than six with the Mavericks coming as close as one point with 7:36 remaining.
It took the final three-pointer from Kim Pol at 3:15, followed by a defensive stop on the next play with a Holly Bourquin block combined with an Oldach steal and fast-break layup that really sealed the deal for Behrend.
The crucial plays came at the right time to help the Lions use a 10-3 run to end the game and avenge a 74-63 loss to the Mavericks on Dec. 1.
Bourquin scored six of her 12 points in the final one minute, 16 seconds. Her layup put the Lions ahead 67-58 and she went 4-for-4 from the line for the double-digit lead with time expiring.
It was the tale of two halves, with the first belonging to Medaille. The Mavericks jumped out to a 20-11 lead off a Jordan Schrimmel three and taking a four-point edge into the locker rooms.
Behrend started the second half on an 18-8 run to spark the turnaround and end with the victory.
Bourquin tied Oldach with nine rebounds and Emily Detsch was the fourth player in double digits with 11 points.
The Lions return to action on Saturday at Penn State Altoona. Game time is 2 p.m.
