Waynesburg Ends Women's Basketball Season

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Elisha Jones scored a game-high 23 points to lead four players in double figures and help Waynesburg defeat Penn State Behrend 73-59 in the semifinals on the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) women's basketball tournament on Saturday.

Jones added six rebounds, four blocks and two steals to help the top-seed Yellow Jackets (19-9) advance to the championship game and bring the Lions (20-8) successful season to end.

Brittany Spencer had a double-double with 18 point and 10 rebounds, while Jessi Drayer added 17 points in the win.

Briana Bayly paced Behrend with 13 points and Amy Oldach scored 12. Oldach made one steal to break the program record for most steals in a season with 105.

It was the 14 points scored off turnovers that made the difference in the first half, allowing Waynesburg to grab a nine-point lead at halftime.

After a close first 10 minutes, the Yellow Jackets turned a one-point lead into eight with an 8-0 run in a four-minute span.  Waynesburg pushed it to 21-12 on a Drayer three-pointer and her jumper with 3:05 made it 29-16.

A short 7-0 burst by Behrend cut the lead to six, but Hannah Hunter drained a trey with under a minute to play for a 32-23 lead at the break.

 

The Yellow Jackets did not let up and kept a double-digit lead into the second half. Bayly scored back-to-back triple to get the Lions within four points at 56-52. Waynesburg was able to regain an 11-point lead with 4:39 remaining at took its largest lead at 73-56 with 20 seconds on the clock.

Aly Eagle finished with 10 points. Holly Bourquin contributed eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
