Lions In Second Place After Day Two of Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. – Senior MaryEllen Spooner (Lockhaven, PA/West Springfield) broke four records while winning two events to keep the Penn State Behrend women's swimming and diving team in first place at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships continued on Friday.

Cabrini has a one-point lead over the Lions with a score of 146-145 after two days of competition. Franciscan is in third with 95 points, Penn State Altoona in fourth (85) and Pitt-Bradford in fifth (66).

In the preliminaries of the 100 backstroke, Spooner set a new team, AMCC meet and open record with a time of 59.96. She broke the same team record yesterday in the opening leg of the medley relay. Spooner went on to win the 100 backstroke in 1:00.26, the same time she broke the record with last year at the championship meet.

Spooner's other record came in the 200 medley relay. She broke the program record in the 50 back with a time of 28.20 en route to the team's final time of 2:00.29 and first-place finish with the help Meagan Daily (Pittsburgh, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), Rachel Skaluba (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and Georgie Hatch (Middletown, MD/Middletown).

Daily and Hatch placed second in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle, respectively. Daily swam a time of 1:07.32 and Hatch clocked in at 2:09.47.

The third second-place finish went to Alex Isaacson (Williamsport, PA/Williamsport) in the 400 IM with a time of 5:26.87.

Skaluba individually participated in the 100 breaststroke, taking third in the AMCC in 1:19.19.

In the final event of the night, Hatch, Isaacson, Sarah Jelinek (Warren, PA/Warren) and Hannah Kelly (Elizabeth, PA/South Allegheny) took third in the 800 free relay in 9:17.39.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for the final day of the championships. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m.
