Lions Defeat Keystone, 11-9

FORT PIERCE, Fl. – Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) went 3-for-5 with a run batted in to lead the Penn State Behrend baseball team past Keystone 11-9 on Thursday afternoon.

The Giants put up a four spot in the bottom of the first before the Lions (4-3) went to work in the top of the second inning.

First, John Hlavinka (Veneita, PA/Peters Township) nailed an RBI single to center field, scoring Casey Kern (Monroeville, PA/Gateway). Then, back-to-back bases loaded walks drove in two more Behrend runs, and Hlavinka and Matt Wolczko then scored via a Keystone (3-9) error.

Jordan Weinzierl (St. Mary's PA/St. Mary's) then drilled an RBI single and Kern closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

When everything was said and done, the Lions led 7-4 after an inning and a half. It was a seven run second from which Behrend never looked back.

Kern padded the Lions' lead in the fourth with an RBI single, and Bohman and Tommy Kocur (Erie, PA/McDowell) capped off the scoring in the sixth with RBI base hits. Weinzierl also scored an unearned run in the same inning.

Freshman Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) earned the win for Behrend, allowing just one earned run, striking out two in 4.2 innings of relief work.

Weinzierl, Kern, Hlavinka, and Kocur each had two hits for the Lions who won jumped over .500 for the first time this season.

Behrend will take on Westminster in a doubleheader at 9 a.m. and noon on Friday, March 14 in Fort Pierce, Florida.
