WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Waynesburg on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, the Lions shut out the Yellow Jackets, 7-0.
Casey Kern (Monroeville, PA/Gateway) opened up the scoring with an RBI groundout in the first.
The second inning saw John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) reach second on an error. He then scored on Alex Margraf's (Erie, PA/McDowell) sacrifice fly.
Jordan Weinzierl (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) and Ryan Finnegan (Fombell, PA/Riverside) followed with back-to-back hits and Behrend led 5-0.
Hlavinka had a sacrifice fly in the third that put the Lions up 7-0.
Dante DeSantis earned the win for Behrend, going four shutout innings and striking out three.
In the nightcap, the Lions defeated the Yellow Jackets, 8-2.
Behrend struck four times in the fourth inning to take command.
Justin Dilla (South Park, PA/South Park) first nailed an RBI single to open the scoring. Margraf followed with a run-scoring single, and then Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) drove in two runs with a double.
Matt Wolczko (Apollo, PA/Kiski) extended the Lions lead in the fifth with a solo home run.
Chad Zurat (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) allowed just one earned run in four innings in the victory.
Behrend is scheduled to host Pitt-Bradford on March 26 at 1 p.m.
