Lions Fall in AMCC Tournament

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team fell to La Roche 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in second round action of the 2014 Allegheny Mountian Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament.

The Lions got on the board first in the top of the fourth. First, John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) led off with a single. Jordan Weinzierl (St. Mary's, PA/St. Mary's) then followed with an RBI double, giving Behrend a 1-0 lead. Afterword, Alex Margraf (Erie, PA/McDowell) singled and Nathan Junk (Cabot, PA/Knoch) walked, but a double play ended the Lions threat.

The Redhawks tied the game in the fifth on Matt Sabatini's RBI fielder's choice.

Mt. Aloysius then took the lead in the seventh when Brian Tougher nailed an RBI single to right center. They expanded their lead to 3-1 in the following inning on John Watson's RBI triple.

The Lions were retired in order in the eighth, and although Junk was able to reach base in the ninth, Behrend was held without a run.

Weinzierl went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Junk reached base three times. Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) went 6.2 innings for the Lions, allowing two runs while striking out two.

Behrend will take on Pitt-Greensburg in an AMCC Tournament elimination game on Sunday, May 11 at 9 a.m.
