ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team is set to defend their Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship in the 2014 AMCC Tournament, beginning Friday.
The second seeded Lions (27-12, 13-3 AMCC) earned a first-round bye and will open with Mt. Aloysius (19-18, 10-6 AMCC) at noon on May 9 at the La Roche Baseball Field.
Behrend and the Mounties split their regular-season series back on April 12. In game two, the Lions defeated Mt. Aloysius 8-2 as Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) had two hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI's.
A dominant pitching staff has helped lead Behrend throughout the season. The Lions have compiled more strikeouts (271) than any other AMCC squad and are tied for the conference lead with a 3.07 team-ERA. Freshman Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) leads the AMCC with a 0.87 ERA and his three saves tied for the conference lead. Dante DeSantis (DuBois, PA/DuBois Central Catholic) went 8-2 with a 2.18 earned run average for Behrend and Chad Zurat (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) finished with a 7-2 record and a 2.39 ERA.
The Lions hit .298 as a team in 2014. Nathan Junk (Cabot, PA/Knoch) leads the squad with a .379 batting average and a .471 on base percentage. Alex Margraf (Erie, PA/McDowell) hit .367 with 22 RBI's and eight doubles, and John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) hit .347 with a team-leading 22 runs batted in. Bohman has homered twice and driven in 22 runs.
