Medaille Defeats Lions In Three Sets

ERIE, Pa. – Bryan Proch hit .562 behind a game-high 10 kills, while Cory Phillips dished out 21 assists to lead Medaille over Penn State Behrend 3-0 in United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action on Wednesday night.

The Mavericks (11-4, 4-2 UVC), currently ranked second in the UVC West Division, won the match in three sets by scores 25-16, 25-16 and 25-19. Trevor Barrett and Erin Kelly each recorded nine kills in the win.

For the Lions (2-11, 2-4 UVC), Nate Steele (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) led with nine kills. Anthony Capizzi (Pittsburgh, PA/Pittsburgh Central Catholic) had seven kills with just one error (.500) and three blocks.

Medaille never trailed in the first set, turning a two-point lead at 10-8 to a six-point advantage thanks to three service points by Kelly. After a Behrend timeout, the Mavericks kept a steady lead and got a kill from Proch and Barrett to collect a 25-16 victory for a 1-0 lead.

In game two, the Lions took the lead off three attack errors by Medaille and a kill by Steele for a 9-7 edge. The Mavericks responded with a 4-0 run to take the lead that would not relinquish. Kelly led Medaille with five kills and an ace in the set, serving the final point to help the Mavericks post an identical score from game one.

With the score tied at 12-all in game three, Zack Beattie served six consecutive points for Medaille to push the lead to 19-13. Behrend got within five on two occasions down the stretch, but a service error and a kill by Kelly sealed the victory.

Evan Fullerton (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) tallied a team-best 12 assists and four digs.

The Lions return to action on Friday at York (NY). Match time is 7 p.m.
