Fredonia State Holds Off Women's Soccer

FREDONIA, NY – Kristie Kleine scored a pair of goals in the first half to lead Fredonia State women's soccer team past Penn State Behrend 2-1 in the opening round of the Blue Devil Clarion Hotel Classic on Friday evening, hosted by Fredonia.

Kleine scored both of her goals less than a minute apart from each other to give the Blue Devils (1-2-0) their first win of the season.

Sam Vasy (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) tallied the lone goal for the Lions (1-2-1) in the second half, while Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) made four saves.

Kleine got Fredonia on the board at the 31:13 mark on a pass from Catie Hale, before Mary Bruton found Kleine for her second goal at 32:06 for the quick 2-0 lead.

Behrend held the Blue Devils scoreless in the second stanza stanza. Vasy was able to cut the deficit to one with an unassisted goal into the bottom left corner in the 68th minute.

Vasy's shot was one of six taken in the second half and three of those shots were saved by Hannah McGlinchey to keep Behrend from having a chance of forcing overtime or taking the lead.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Utica in the second round of the classic. Game time is 3 p.m.
