WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend women's track and field program finished third at the 2011 Washington and Jefferson Invitational, Saturday in a field of 16.
Behrend had several top performances at W&J, but none more spectacular than the women's 4x400m relay team. Victoria Harwood ran the opening leg followed by Mandy Wehrle, Katie Spade and cross country standout, Jenna Fatica. Fatica crossed the line at 4:06.72 to give the squad a first place finish and a new school record.
The four would all return later in the day to hold top positions in individual competition. First, In a close race, Fatica (3rd) and Harwood (5th) ran the 400m in 61.26 seconds and 61.85 seconds, respectively. Spade then clocked in the 1500m competition at 5:00.56 (5th), while Wehrle took fifth in the 200m race (27.39 seconds).
Kylie Swanson and Angela Sweeney soared over the bar in the pole vault competition, each clearing 9' 2.25".
In other field events, Katie Monoskey threw the discus 103' 3" and placed eighth. Friday, Monoskey placed first in the hammer throw at the Carneigie Mellon Invitational, hurling the weight 39.74 meters.
Wrapping up the invitational were Tanisha Wheatley (12:28.29) and Haley Hughes (12:43.42) who competed in the challenging steeplechase course. The two women finished third and fourth, respectively.
