Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Bridgewater State

VERO BEACH, Fl. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team split a doubleheader with Bridgewater State Thursday afternoon. Bridgewater State (3-5) won game one in 10 innings by a score of 11-7 while the Lions (4-2) took game two, 10-3.

Game one took three extra innings in a wild back and forth contest. Behrend scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra's and added a three-run comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning to force a tenth frame.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-La Salle) came through in the clutch with a two-out two-RBI single that sent the game into extra innings.

After giving up three runs in the top of the ninth, the Lions once again stepped up in the bottom half of the inning. After Boehme scored on a wild pitch, Corey Bowers (Westlake, OH/Westlake) singled with two outs plating two runs to tie the game. Bowers finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI's.

Bridgewater State countered with four runs in the top of the 10th to earn the victory.

Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) started game two on the bump and earned the victory throwing five innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out seven.

Behrend led 3-2 heading into the top of the sixth inning after scoring two runs in the third and one in the fourth. The Lions erupted for five runs in the top of the sixth off hits by John Hlavinka, (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) Brian Bohman (Erie, PA /McDowell) and Boehme.

Behrend tacked on two more runs in the seventh on a Hlavinka single to put the game out of reach.

Hlavinka finished the day 5-for-9 with four RBI's and four runs scored. Justin Dilla started behind the dish in game two providing a 2-for-2 day with a walk, three runs scored and an RBI.

The Lions rematch their opening day opponent St. Scholastica tomorrow at 1 p.m.
