Baseball Falls in I-90 Cup Rematch

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia (14-17) avenged their loss to the Penn State Behrend baseball team from earlier this season, claiming victory in the second edition of the battle for the I-90 Cup. The Blue Devils took the rivalry game by a score of 6-3.

Nathan Junk (Cabot, PA/Knoch) followed up a four-hit game yesterday with another strong performance going 2-for-4 from the plate with 2 RBI's. Junk got the Lions (23-10-1) on the board in the fifth with a two-out RBI single to right field that brought Behrend within one.

Leading 3-1, Fredonia added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the eighth to build a five-run lead with only three outs remaining for the Lions.

Behrend was able to push across two runs in the ninth on Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Junk RBI singles to cut the lead to three, but it was too little too late.

Bergstrom, Jordan Weinzierl (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) and John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) each contributed two hits. Hlavinka scored twice and also added a walk.

With a first round bye in the conference tournament, the Lions will await the winner of Mt. Aloysius and Medaille. That best of three series will begin this Saturday at 10 a.m. The Lions will take the field Friday, May 8 at 1 p.m. against the victor.
