Herzing K's 16; Baseball Sweeps Penn State Altoona

ERIE, Pa. – Jack Herzing (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Catholic) tossed a complete game with a career-high 16 strikeouts in game one while Brian Bohman's (Erie, PA/McDowell) two-run homerun in game two lifted the Penn State Behrend baseball team to a sweep of conference rival Penn State Altoona Monday afternoon. The Behrend Lions (11-4, 2-2 AMCC) took game one by a score of 4-1 and won game two, 7-4.

Herzing was dominant on the bump in game one throwing his first career complete game. Herzing allowed no earned runs, three hits, one walk and punched out 16. He picked up the victory and improved his record to 4-0.

In the first inning, Bohman drew a two-out walk and came around to score when Nathan Junk (Cabot, PA/Knoch) blasted a triple to plate the game's first run.

After adding a run in the third, Behrend scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of two-out RBI singles by Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) and Alex Margraf (Erie, PA/McDowell). The insurance runs were more than enough as the Lions were able to hold on for the win.

In game two, Bohman gave the Lions a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run homerun to deep left center. Behrend added a run in the eighth off a John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) double to take a three-run advantage.

Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) came on in relief in the seventh inning providing the Lions with 2.2 scoreless innings. Rohrer struck out four and earned his third win of the season.

Justin Wood (Allegany, NY/Allegany Limestone) started the game on the bump and went six innings giving up just two earned runs with five punch-outs.

Bohman finished the day 2-for-6 from the plate with three RBI's and three runs scored. Junk also had a nice day at the plate going 3-for-7 while driving in three. Margraf added three hits in six tries in the doubleheader, while Hlavinka had a 3-for-7 day with two RBI's.

Behrend returns to action Thursday for a non-conference match-up with Allegheny at home. The single nine inning game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
