Baseball Claims First-Ever I-90 Cup

FREDONIA, NY. – In the inaugural battle for the I-90 Cup, the Penn State Behrend baseball team defeated Fredonia by a score of 10-1 in non-conference action to notch the first-ever claim to the trophy.

A six-run second inning highlighted by a John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) two-RBI single gave the Lions (9-4) an early 6-0 lead in the nine inning affair.

Behrend's pitchers were able to hold Fredonia's offense in check combining to allow just six hits and one run while punching out nine. Starting pitcher Tylor Williams (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) was brilliant in his five innings of work surrendering no runs and allowing only one hit with five strikeouts. Williams picked up his first victory of the season.

The Lions struck again in the top of the eighth inning for four runs. David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-La Salle) drove in two runs with a single after Behrend got runners on base via two walks and a hit by pitch. Anthony Faulk (Blairsville, PA/Blairsville) brought in the third run of the inning on a ground out and a wild pitch allowed Boehme to plate the fourth run of the inning.

Hitting out of the lead-off spot, Hlavinka provided a 1-for-2 day with two walks and two RBI's. Boehme drove in a career-high three runs and scored twice himself.

Tyler Geer, (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) Andrew Quiggle (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy (Central Tech)) and Alex Hajduk (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) all made strong relief appearances to seal the claim to the cup.

The Lions are scheduled for a doubleheader with Pitt-Bradford tomorrow at home. The start time is slated for 1 p.m.
