Lions Comeback Falls Short; Mount Union Wins, 8-6

ERIE, Pa. – Mount Union (18-12) recorded 20 hits in an 8-6 victory over the Penn State Behrend baseball team in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders opened the scoring in the second inning with a two spot and added four runs in the fifth to build a 6-0 lead.

Corey Bowers (Westlake, OH/Westlake) drove in the first run for the Lions (17-8) in the fourth with a clutch two-out base hit up the middle that made the score 2-1.

After Mount Union tacked on a run in the top half of the sixth, Behrend answered when Nathan Noe (Albion, PA/Northwestern) contributed a pinch-hit RBI single to right field.

The Lions scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-6, but Behrend could not complete the comeback in the ninth.

Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) pinch hit in the eighth inning and knocked a two-RBI double down the left field line that sparked the four-run frame. Tommy Kocur (Erie, PA/McDowell) followed with single to right field that drove in two runs cutting the lead to just two.

Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) had a 3-for-5 day from the plate, his third three-hit performance of the season.

The Lions will look to rebound on Tuesday when they hit the road to take on Allegheny. The non-conference match-up will start at 4 p.m.
