Six Named All-Conference; Cannella Earns Newcomer of the Year

ERIE, Pa. – Six members of the Penn State Behrend women's tennis team have been named to the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) team, announced on Tuesday.

The Lions had three singles players and two pairs of doubles make the first team, while freshman Jacqueline Cannella (Bradford Woods, PA/North Allegheny) was named Newcomer of the Year.

Junior Alexandra Laffey (Sewickley, PA/North Allegheny) earned first-team honors at No. 2 singles for posting a perfect mark in AMCC play at 8-0 and then finishing the year 14-1 at that spot. Cannella led Behrend at No. 3 singles, recording an 8-5 record and a 6-1 mark in conference play to be named the top freshman in the AMCC.

Malinda Miller (Champion, PA/Connellsville) never lost a match in her final season with the Lions. She dominated at No. 6 singles to earn her first nod on the All-AMCC first team. Miller registered a 12-0 overall record and 7-0 mark in the conference.

Laffey and partner and Chelsea Czerwinski (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) are selected to first team at No. 1 doubles for the third year in a row. The duo managed a 10-4 overall record and 6-1 conference mark for the season, going undefeated in the AMCC Tournament in the two matches.

Kelly Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) and Celeste Bentley (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) were named to the first team at No. 3 doubles. Bentley repeats on the first team in doubles after earning the honor at No. 2 last season. The freshman and sophomore tag team were undefeated together with a 12-0 record. The pair also tallied a 6-0 mark in the AMCC.

Colleen Miller (Louisville, OH/Louisville) was the fourth player to be named All-AMCC in singles play. The senior was chosen to the second team at No. 5 singles for posting a 7-4 record in that spot. Overall, Miller was 9-5 in singles play, including a 6-1 conference mark. She was clutch in the AMCC Tournament, helping Behrend win the conference title with a comeback victory at No. 5 singles in the championship.
