Wheaton Too Much For Lions in NCAA First Round

WHEATON, Ill. – The sixth-ranked Wheaton women's soccer team scored two goals in the first half and three more in the second to defeat Penn State Behrend 5-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday night.

Keri Shannon netted two goals and tallied one assist to lead the Thunder into the second-round game tomorrow against the winner of the other first-round contest between Alma and Capital.

The Lions (13-7-1) withstood 28 shots by Wheaton, while Robin Siegenthaler (Penns Valley, PA/Penns Valley) made a valiant effort in goal with 10 saves. All of the Thunder's goals were precisely placed and the defense held Behrend to just two shots for the shut out.

Shannon got Wheaton on the board in the 25th minute with a shot from 10-yards out from an assist by Kaitlyn Le Baudour, before assisting Jaime Orewiler on the second goal at the 37:07. Orewiler also scored from 10-yards out for a 2-0 lead.

Shannon started the scoring in the second half in the 65th minute to make it 3-0 with the double assist going to Orewiler and Marlee Disher.  The Thunder posted their fourth goal off a header from Sarah Guidera thanks to a chip pass from Erin Strom.

The Lions were awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute, but Kelsey Graham made her only save on Valerie Wagner's (Pittsburgh, PA/Montour) attempt to stop Behrend's only chance.
