Women's Soccer Captures Blue Devil Classic; Weyand Named MVP

FREDONIA, NY – The Penn State Behrend women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Oswego State 2-1 to win the Fredonia Blue Devil Classic Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (2-3) posted their second straight win to be crowned the classic champions. Rachel Weyand (Butler, PA/Butler) was named the MVP for netting the game winner in yesterday's 3-2 victory over Fredonia while adding an assist today on the game-winning goal by Jordan Oberlander (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf).

Gionna Fonseca (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional), Olivia Belack (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair) and Megan Schwartz (Shaler, PA/Shaler Area) were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts this weekend.

Behrend battled back from a 1-0 deficit with two goals in less than six minutes in the second half.

Oswego State buried a shot in front of the box from Nicole Perniciaro on a pass from Bailey Waterbury in the 57th minute to get on the board first.

The Lions responded 10 minutes later with Schwartz's first collegiate goal. She managed to knock the ball in a deflection off goalie Melissa Siegfried to knot the game at 1-all.

Behrend kept pressing and were able to get the go-ahead goal from the Oberland-Weyand duo. Weyand sent a cross into the box and Oberlander sent a header into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead at the 72:47 mark.

The Lions held Oswego State scoreless for the remaining 18 minutes of the game to go undefeated at the Classic. Taylor Troyan (Butler, PA/Butler) made two saves for her second win of the season.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday against Mt. Union. Game time is 7 p.m.
