Six-Run Fifth Lifts Baseball Past Wilkes

FORT PIERCE, Fl. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team used a six-run fifth inning to lift themselves past Wilkes University 11-6 Monday afternoon.

Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) went 2-for-3 from the plate with three RIBs, including the go-ahead run in the fifth. In the bottom of the first, he roped a one-out triple that knocked home John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) for the Lions' (2-1) first run.

Bohman then stepped up in the fifth with two runners on and notched a single, scoring the go-ahead and an insurance run. He scored twice and added a walk as well in the contest.

Behrend used the fifth inning for the second day in a row to make their comeback. A five-run fifth Sunday led them to an 8-7 win over Drew and now a six-run fifth was their big inning against the Colonels (2-3).

After going down 4-1 through four, the Lions got their first six batters of the fifth to reach base all of which scored.

Corey Bowers (Westlake, OH/Westlake) led off the bottom half with a single, Kyle Hunt (Russell, PA/Calvary Chapel Christian) followed reaching on an error on his sacrifice attempt and Matt Wolczko (Apollo, PA/Kiski) drew a walk to load the bases.

Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny), at the top of the order, found a gap with a two-run single that scored Bowers and Hunt. Hlavinka singled in Wolzco to tie the game at six-all before Bohman gave Behrend the lead with his two-run single.

Three batters later, Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) tallied his first hit of the game and drove in Bohman to finish the scoring in the monster inning.

Behrend tacked on another four runs to give themselves a few more insurance runs. Justin Foreman (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette) knocked in two of those runs with a one-out double in the seventh for his first collegiate hit.

Zachary Krivda (McKeesport, PA/McKeesport Area) picked up the win, putting in seven innings of work and recording five strikeouts. Sean Rutkosky (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) threw the final two innings without giving up a hit while string out three.

The Lions continue their spring trip against Northwestern (Minn.) at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.
