Baseball Falls in I-90 Cup Rematch

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team fell in this season's I-90 Cup rematch to Fredonia State 17-10 Monday afternoon in non-conference action.

After being down 10-8 after eight innings, the Blue Devils (17-17) scored nine runs on six hits and an error in the top of the ninth inning to take the I-90 Cup back to back across the state boarder into New York.

The Lions (21-13) tallied 10 runs on 11 hits, led by Ian Taylor (Wexford, PA/Vincentian Academy), William Kirkpatrick (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum), Nathan Noe (Albion, PA/Northwestern) and John Werbowsky (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) who all had two hits. Noe and Werbowsky were each 2-for-2 and Noe had two RBIs while Werbowsky drove in one.

Fredonia took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but Behrend got all three runs back in the bottom of the second. The Lions then took their first lead with a Noe sacrifice fly that score Kirkpatrick in the third.

The Blue Devils bounced back in the fourth, scoring five runs on three hits and two errors. The Lions would continue to battle however. In the bottom of the fifth, they plated three more runs and cutting their deficit to one at 8-7.

Like Sunday, Behrend took the lead in the eighth inning, but this time not in the form of a walk-off base knock. After pinch hitting in the sixth, David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-Le Salle) singled in Taylor to tie the game at eight.

Werbowsky then singled through the left side that scored Kirkpatrick and after a throwing error by the Fredonia catcher trying to gun Boehme out at third, Boehme scored to take a 10-8 lead heading into the final frame.

The Blue Devils scored a single inning season-high nine runs in the ninth and shut the door in the home half to hoist the trophy for the first time this season.

The Lions get a day off and are back in action at home against Medaille on Wednesday. Game times are slotted for 1 and 4 p.m.
