Behrend Baseball Announces 2016 Team Awards

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team announced their team awards Wednesday, after finishing their season runners-up in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships with a 30-18 overall record.

Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) was named the team's MVP as an All-AMCC Third Team selection. He led the team in triples (4), home runs (5) and stolen bases (12), while ranking second in runs scored (39) and RBIs (40) this season. Bohman also posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 48 chances behind the dish in AMCC play and .971 overall.

Zach Murray (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was voted the Most Improved Player. Murray stepped into the backup catching spot during his second season with the club and provide a big spark in the lineup. He posted a .296 batting average with 20 runs scored and 14 runs batted in. In 108 chances behind the plate, he recorded a .963 fielding percentage and gunned down two runners trying to steal.  

The Rookie of the Year award went to Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown). He was a First-Team All-AMCC selection and was named to the D3baseball All-Region Third Team and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Region Second Team. Sada led the team in batting average (.376), at bats (170), hits (64), doubles (25) and slugging percentage (.588). He set a new program record for doubles in a season with 25. Sada also posted a .974 fielding percentage in 156 total chances and was a perfect 11-for-11 stealing bases.

The team's Most Valuable Pitcher was Phil Myers (DuBois, PA/DuBois Central Catholic). Myers made 10 starts in 13 appearances during his freshman campaign. He was second on the team with 64.0 innings pitched and posted a 4-3 record. In his first home start, he threw a seven inning complete game shutout with seven strikeouts. Myers finished the season with 45 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.80.

Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) was awarded the Gold Glove for his outstanding defensive play during the season. In his 83 total chances in conference play, he committed only one error to post a .988 fielding percentage, the fourth-best percentage for any player with more than 80 chances. Bergstrom was first in the conference in assists with 62 during conference play and second overall with 167 all season.

Senior Alex Margraf (Erie, PA/McDowell) received the Herb Lauffer Leadership/Scholarship Award. Margraf hit .279 with nine doubles, 14 runs batted in and 20 runs scored. He posted an impressive .975 fielding percentage running down fly balls in the outfield and added two assists to go with his 77 put outs.

The Spirit and Hustle Award went to Corey Bowers (Westlake, OH/Westlake). Injury cut his final season with the Lions short, but it did not affect his spirit and support for his teammates. Bowers hit at a .294 clip during the season, knocking in three runs and scoring 10 himself. He drew nine walks to post a .467 on-base percentage and did not make a fielding error all year.
