Baseball Closes Roanoke Series With Loss

SALEM, Va. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team lost 8-2 Sunday afternoon in their third game of the weekend against Roanoke.

A three-run fourth and a three-run sixth led the Maroons (16-8) to take the series against the Lions (10-5). This is Behrend's third loss in their last four games.

David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-Le Salle) provided most of Behrend's offensive power, racking up three hits in four at bats with a RBI. Boehme singled through the right side in the top of the first that scored John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) from second and gave the Lions an early lead.

Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) started the game strong, getting through the first two innings without surrendering a hit. He remained strong to start the third, retiring the first two batters, but two walks and an error behind him loaded the bases for Drew Mikula to record the first Roanoke hit and single in two runs.

The Maroon would really extend their lead in the fourth and then again in the sixth. A combined nine hits and six runs gave Roanoke a commanding 8-2 lead two-thirds of the way through the matchup.

The Lions were unable to string anything together through the remainder of the game, only registering two more hits in the remaining three innings. Boehme singled before being forced into a 5-4-3 double play and Matt Wolczko (Apollo, PA/Kiski) tripled, but was unable to score in the eighth inning.

Behrend is back on the road on Wednesday when they travel to Fredonia for a 4 p.m. game.
