Five Athletes Qualify for ECAC's at Westminster Invitational

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend women's track and field team participated at the Westminster Invitational on Saturday afternoon, with five athletes qualifying for the ECAC outdoor meet.

Victoria Harwood (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) led the way for the Lions with a first place finish in the pole vault.  Harwood cleared 3.58m to qualify for ECAC's, set a new school record, and move into the top-15 in the nation.  Harwood also competed in the 400m dash, taking third place with a time of 1:00.70.

Katie Spade (Warren, PA/Warren) also qualified for the ECAC outdoor meet.  Spade won the 800m run, crossing the finish line at 2:19.43.

In the 3000m steeplechase, Haley Hughes (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) had a record-breaking day.  Hughes placed third with a time of 11:38.95.  Hughes set a new school record and qualified for ECAC's.  She also competed in the 5000m run, finishing in 19:13.72 for 10th place.

Catie Bertges (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) and Katie Patterson (Erie, PA/Villa Maria) rounded out the five athletes who will earn a trip to the ECAC meet with strong times in the 10000m run. Bertges finished in 39:46.42 for fourth place. Patterson was close behind in fifth place at 40:24.45.

Zofia Stark (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep) competed in the 5000m run with Hughes. Stark took home fifth place, crossing the line in 19:00.04.  In the 400m hurdles, Jamie Szramowski (Pittsburgh, PA/Oakland Catholic) placed fifth with a time of 1:12.29.

Back in the field events, Katie Monoskey (Punxsutawney, PA/Punxsutawney) and April McDermott (Atco, NJ/ Hammonton) had strong outings in the discus throw. Monoskey hit 33.60m for fifth place.  McDermott placed seventh with a distance of 33.48m.

Along with Harwood, two other athletes help Behrend dominate the pole vault.  Nicole Teribery (Bradford, PA/Bradford) took third, clearing 3.13m.  Angela Sweeney (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) vaulted over 2.98m for fifth place.

As a team, the Lions placed fourth out of 13 schools.

Behrend will be back in action on Saturday at the IUP Invitational.
