The Penn State Behrend volleyball team recently announced its
team award winners for the 2009 season. The Behrend
volleyball team award winners are chosen by a vote of team
members.
Danielle Woods (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) was named team MVP for the
2009 season. The junior transitioned to the role of libero
and came through with a big season, posting 454 digs and 42 service
aces for the blue and white.
Senior middle hitter Sheila Ogden (Grove City/Grove City) was named the team's leadership/scholarship award winner. Ogden was one of three seniors in 2009 and led the team in kills (294), hitting percentage (.318), and blocks (81).
Alyssa Pears (Meadville/Meadville) was named the team's most improved player. The freshman middle hitter finished with 19 kills in 22 games played for the blue and white.
Freshman outside hitter Mary Sperry (Atlantic/Conneaut Lake) was named the team's rookie of the year for 2009. The first-year outside hitter totaled 377 digs, 199 kills, and 43 service aces for the Behrend Lions.
Senior outside hitter Carissa Johnston (Cambridge Springs/Cambridge Springs) was selected as the team's representative for the AMCC All-Sportsmanship team. Johnston tallied 197 kills, 160 digs, and 37 blocks in 2009.
In 2009 the Behrend volleyball team reached the AMCC Championship match, earned the program's third ECAC bid in the past four seasons, and finished with a record of 22-11.
