Volleyball Defeats Medaille; Clinches Third Seed

ERIE, Pa. – Mary Sperry recorded 14 digs, eight kills and three aces and Stephanie Kelley tallied 10 digs and five kills to lead Penn State Behrend over Medaille 3-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) volleyball action on Wednesday.

The Lions (17-10, 6-2 AMCC) clinched the third seed in the upcoming conference playoffs and will host the No. 6 seed (TBA) on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Danielle Woods contributed nine digs and two aces, while Carly Higham delivered nine assists.

Behrend took a 23-18 lead in game one, the Mavericks scored five straight points to even it at 23. Both teams rallied back-and-forth, until the Lions broke the 26-all standstill by winning three straight points thanks to two points earned by blocks for a 28-26 victory.

In game two, Behrend scored three out of the four points on offense to take the lead at 20-17. Sperry and Higham recorded a kill and Kelley served up an ace.  Medaille battled back to even the score at 22-all, but Treser slammed the ball for a point and Sperry got the final on an ace for a 2-0 edge in the match.

The Mavericks ran out of steam in game three, falling 25-14. The Lions grabbed a 10-4 lead behind a kill from Jessica Woods and Sperry along with an ace from Kelley. Behrend held a nine-point lead on two-occasions and also ended the match that way. At 21-14, Sperry knocked down a kill and D. Woods collected back-to-back aces before an attack error by Medaille put away the match.

Kelley also added three blocks and aces in the ninth straight win for the Lions.

Behrend return to action Saturday in its final regular-season match at Mt. Aloysius, beginning at 1 p.m.
