Behrend Captures Own Invitational; Sperry Named MVP

ERIE, Pa.  – The Penn State Behrend women’s volleyball team did not lose a single game on the second day of their invitational to be crowed tournament champions with wins over D’Youville and Grove City, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (5-3) went unscathed over the two-day tournament, defeating Carnegie Mellon on Friday night. Mary Sperry was named the MVP, while Stefanie Kelley was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Kelley recorded 19 kills and Sperry knocked down 15 kills on the day.

Behrend opened the day against D’Youville, winning 26-24, 25-9, 25-11. In the first game, the Lions were down 20-13 and Kelly Treser served seven straight points rally back for a 23-21 lead. Behrend held on for the win and never trailed in the next two games. Danielle Woods tallied 16 digs and Carly Higham dished out 17 assists. Jessica Woods was the leader in blocks with seven.

Grove City put up more of a fight in the second match of the day. The Lions won by the same score in game one and then posted 25-18 and 25-20 victories to keep the championship trophy at home.  Sperry led with 13 kills and Woods posted 22 digs, while Lexy Weissinger added 13 digs.

Behrend will take its three-game winning streak on the road Wednesday night to face Ursuline. Match time is 7 p.m.
