Lions Split at Marietta Classic

MARIETTA, Ohio  – The Penn State Behrend women’s volleyball team split on day one of the Marietta River City Classic on Friday night. The Lions fell to Bethany 3-0 in the first match, before defeating Denison 3-1 in the nightcap.

The Bisons defeated Behrend (1-1) in three straight games (25-18, 25-7, 25-21). Mary Sperry led the attack with six kills and freshman Kelly Treser added five kills.

The Lions battled back to collect their first win of the season against the Big Red. Behrend won the first two games 25-14 and 25-21. Denison made it 2-1 with a close 25-23 game three victory, but the Lions matched that score (25-23) in the final game to win the match, 3-1.

Jessica Woods had a team-best nine kills and Sperry was right behind with eight kills, while senior Danielle Woods tallied five service aces. Dishing out the assists was Carly Higham, recording 23 against the Big Red.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for day two of the classic against Kenyon and Marietta at 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
