Volleyball Edges Carnegie Mellon, 3-1

ERIE, Pa.  – The Penn State Behrend volleyball team picked up its third win of the season and first of the Behrend Invitational on Friday night. The Lions defeated Carnegie Mellon 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 30-28, 25-19) in non-conference action.

Mary Sperry and Stephanie Kelley led the attack with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Chelsea Magnusen and Carly Higham split the setter duties. Magnusen had a season-high 17 assists, while Highman tallied 11 in the win.

Danielle Woods, playing in the libero position, posted a team-best 23 digs and Jessica Woods made six blocks.

With the match tied at 1-all, both teams made the third game exciting that went into extra sets. Behrend won 11 points off its serve, including the final two out of three to win the match thanks to Higham and Kelly Treser.

The fourth game, the Tartans were down 22-18 and were forced to take a timeout. The Lions came out of the break and won the next four out of five points for the victory.

Behrend is back in action tomorrow against D’Youville at 12 p.m. The Lions second match will feature Grove City at 3 p.m.
