Behrend Lions Volleyball Starts 2009 Season With 3-0 Win Over Buffalo State

On Tuesday, September 1, the Behrend Lions cruised in three straight games to open the 2009 season with a win over Buffalo State.

"This is a good win against an improved Buffalo State squad," said Head Coach Phil Pisano. "The strength of our team right now is our defense, serving and passing. That was the difference in the match."

Behrend played well in from of 150 fans in the Junker Center and earned game one 25-13. They soon followed with 25-16 and 25-23 set wins.

Offensively, Lauren Dalton (Cochranton/Cochranton) smashed 15 kills to lead the team, while Shelia Ogden (Grove City/Grove City) chipped in nine kills. In her first collegiate match, outside hitter Mary Sperry (Atlantic/Conneaut Lake) pounded seven kills to go along with 11 digs. Junior Danielle Woods (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) led the defense with 14 digs in the home opener.

Around the corner will be four matches at the Gettysburg Tournament this Friday, September 4, and Saturday, September 5. Behrend opens against the tournament hosts at 3:00 p.m. and follows with a 5:00 p.m. match against Geneva. On day two, Coach Pisano's crew will face Randolph-Macon at 12 noon, and then play Neumann at 2:00 p.m.
