Women's Basketball Claims Tip-Off Tournament Title

ERIE, Pa. – Brittany Wilwohl (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) and Julia Myers (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) each recorded a game-best 17 points to help the Penn State Behrend women's basketball team win their Tip-Off Tournament with a 72-58 win over Marietta on Saturday afternoon.

Wilwohl was named the tournament's MVP with her 17-point performance today and 10 points in the semifinals. Myers provided a strong presence in the paint and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the second straight contest to help the Lions (2-0) capture their own tournament for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

Aly Eagle (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) and Emily Detsch (St. Mary's, PA/Elk County Catholic) knocked in three triples apiece, while Kim Pol (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) led with five assists.

Kristeva Rowe and Tori Dixon each scored nine points for the Pioneers (2-1), and both were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

After a close first half that saw Marietta take a 35-33 lead into the locker rooms, Behrend made it a different second half. The Lions shot 47.3 percent from the floor and buckled down on the defense to hold the Pioneers to just 21.2 percent.

Behrend chipped away at Marietta's five-point advantage, eventually taking a double-digit lead midway through the second half thanks to an 8-1 run.

Detsch made a layup and Myers collected three points, followed by three more points by Wilwohl to make it 57-45 in favor of the Lions.

The Pioneers cut the lead to five with 3:40 left to play at 59-54, but they would only score four more points in the half while Behrend had its sights set on the championship trophy. The Lions closed out the game with a 13-4 run and 5-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line.

Eagle finished with 15 points and Detsch added 11.

Behrend returns to action on Tuesday against RIT. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
