Lions Defense Stops Saxons

ALFRED, NY – Aly Eagle (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) and Brittany Wilwohl (Erie, PA/Villa Maria Academy) combined for 47 points to lead the Penn State Behrend women's basketball past Alfred 75-57 in non-conference action on Friday afternoon.

Playing for the first time since December 10, the Lions (7-2) are ringing in the New Year with their seventh win of the season. Wilwohl led with 24 points and Eagle drained four three-pointers for 23.

Grace Williamson went 9-for-12 from the floor to record a team-high 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the double-double for the Saxons (7-2).

Behrend forced 26 turnovers and outscored Alfred 44-27 in the second half to collect the victory.

The Lions and the Saxons kept it close in the first half. Behrend darted out in the opening minutes with a 10-2 run. Alfred answered with a 12-0 spurt to take a 13-10 advantage with 12:20 left in the half. From here, both teams went point-for-point with the lead changing four times and the scored tied on five occasions.

The second half was a different story, favoring the Lions.  Behrend came out of intermission shooting 5-for-8 from the field and getting a triple from Eagle and Wilwohl to take a 43-34 lead in the first two and a half minutes.

Eagle netted the next five straight points and Wilwohl followed with five consecutive points of her own to increase the Lions lead by 17.

Behrend held on to its double digit lead throughout the second half, although the Saxons managed to get it down to 11 points three times with the final coming at the 5:38 mark.

Holly Bourquin (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) added 13 points and eight rebounds in the win for the Lions.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday at D'Youville. Game time is at 8 p.m.
